How do you prevent plagiarism in your classroom?
It is good to let students know about and learn how to use plagiarism detection software, but it is far from the answer to the plagiarism problem in higher education. First of all, more and more students are learning how to "beat" plagiarism detection software. Here is an article from back in 2011 about how easy plagiarism software is to beat: https://www.timeshighereducation.com/news/plagiarism-software-can-be-beaten-by-simple-tech-tricks/414881.article.

I have never been a huge advocate for it anyway because while the software does a decent job of detecting word-for-word plagiarism, it doesn't do anything for the bigger problem--lack of proper attribution. Students often think that if they use quotation marks and cite quotes then they are home free, and sometimes they think if they re-write in their own words then they don't need attribution because the software won't pick up the plagiarism. There are so many reasons to emphasize the process rather than the product, at least for freshmen English courses.

    edit?
I think this "page" is essentially identical to the page titled "Word-for-Word," and should be deleted. I believe I could do it (as an editor), but that seems to be a bit more than an "edit." :-)

How do you prevent plagiarism in your classroom?
Just like drivers who understand how police radar guns can detect them exceeding the speed limit adjust their speed accordingly, I expect that students knowing (even seeing a demonstration!) of tools that detect plagiarism would be an eye opener and alter their behavior. If they know YOU employ such tools, they would surely not try to slip in any basic copy/paste...or would they? (Maybe I'm too naive...)
